Barcelona and biodiversity

The next Gastronomic Forum Barcelona (GFB), which will take place from November 6 to 8, 2023 in Hall 8 of the Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc venue, will focus on cuisine that seeks to preserve biodiversity. This program will highlight the importance of sustainability and social responsibility in gastronomy, making clear Barcelona's commitment to biodiversity.

During the event, celebrity chefs and experts from the gastronomy scene will offer classes, thematic sessions and presentations to address the latest trends and discuss the main future challenges of the sector. The chefs who will participate in the event are Joan Roca, Jesús Sánchez, Oriol Castro and Eduard Xatruc, Albert Adrià, María Marte and Bego Rodrigo. Their presence guarantees an enriching and diverse experience for GFB attendees.

In the current edition, many of the participating restaurants have obtained not only the traditional Michelin stars, but also green Michelin stars. These special stars are awarded to those establishments that stand out for their commitment and innovation in preserving the environment. These restaurants implement initiatives to sustainably manage resources and reduce waste.

"From Greenland to Cantabria and Galicia, passing through Belgium, Switzerland and arriving in Barcelona, ​​we will attend keynote presentations that cry out, from the kitchen, for the vital need to safeguard the environment and biodiversity throughout the planet", explains the co-director Gastronomic Forum Barcelona and head of the activities program, Pep Palau.

In addition to the preservation of biodiversity and sustainability, another highlight of the program will be the transformative power of the kitchen. There will be new initiatives from various internationally renowned cooks who are committed to disruptive social projects. These cooks want to promote contemporary values ​​that contribute to changing the world through gastronomy. Her innovative projects and her focus on cooking as a tool for social change will be highlighted during the event, offering inspiration and perspectives on how cooking can have a positive impact on society. The chefs who will attend are:

  • María Marte, a Dominican chef, who will focus her intervention on the projects of her foundation, which aims to recover native products and dignify the work of women, especially in rural areas.
  • Kamilla Seidler, Danish chef and manager of the Lola restaurant in Copenhagen.
  • Joke Michiel, Belgian chef at the Souvenir restaurant in Ghent, who received the 2022 Parabere Care Award.
  • Manon Fleury, a "nomad" French chef who does not have her own restaurant and cooks in places where she feels in tune with her surroundings.

Other proposals.

At the Gastronomic Forum Barcelona there will be several additional areas to enrich the experience of the attendees:

  1. Market for small organic producers: Promoted by the Barcelona City Council, AMB and Mercabarna, this market will offer a space where cooking demonstrations and reflection sessions will alternate, with the aim of adding value to organic farming and promoting local and sustainable products.
  2. Forum Bar: A new exhibition space dedicated to cocktails and spirits, managed by Neodrinks. It will be a place where visitors can explore the latest trends in the world of beverages and enjoy experiences related to mixology.
  3. Aula Catalunya: Organized by Prodeca and the Provincial Councils of Barcelona, ​​Girona and Lleida, this space will offer gastronomic activities and demonstrations to highlight the culinary wealth of Catalonia.
  4. Aula Makro: A space dedicated to gastronomic activities and presentations in collaboration with Makro, a wholesale food and supplies company for the hotel industry.

In addition, the next edition of the GFB is expected to be the largest so far, with more than 87% of the exhibition space already reserved. There will be more than three hundred and fifty exhibiting companies and a 20% growth in the exhibition offer compared to the previous edition in 2022. This guarantees a wide variety of experiences, products and services for event attendees, a perfect event that will reinforce the relationship of Barcelona and biodiversity.
