Changes in the Cava DO to face the drought

Today the changes in conditions of the Denomination of Origin Cava to cope with drought. Without a doubt, the publication of the possible ERTE in the Cavista company Freixenet, which affected 615 people, has motivated and accelerated these changes. And the great drought in the Catalan countryside will lead to a decrease in production. In this sense, solutions have been sought, only for this season, to alleviate the low production and which we summarize in this article.

The measures of the DO Cava to face the drought

The so-called Qualitative Guarantee Provision covers three major measures that will only affect the 2024 campaign.

The first of the measures is to increase the authorized production from 12.000 Kg to 15.000 Kg/Ha. All of this always with authorization from the regulatory council with the aim of guaranteeing quality.

The second measure is to expand the extraction yield, which will go from 67% to 74%. This will also require authorization from the Regulatory Council, which will control traceability and quality.

Finally, and as a third measure, the use of production from vineyards not assigned to the DO Cava but that are in the same territory will be authorized. All this without exceeding 15% of the winery's production.

The Cavas de Guarda will not be affected by the measure

It should be added that these changes are only intended for the Cavas de Guarda but in no case for the Cavas de Guarda Superior (Reserva, Gran Reserva and Paraje Calificado). It should be specified that the so-called Cavas de Guarda Superior have specific regulations that guarantee superior quality standards.

Allegations can be presented regarding these measures, which may be controversial and may affect the prestige of the DO Cava in the market. So from today and within a period of two months, allegations can be presented to oppose the aforementioned modification request.
