A survey of the Spanish Federation of Societies of Nutrition, Food and Dietetics (FESNAD) shows very revealing data. It shows that only 23% of Spaniards meet the fish intake recommended by nutritionists. And it is a curious fact, since according to the same survey, 94% of Spaniards confess that they like to consume this food.

The reasons for not meeting the recommended intake

What is the reason for not eating all the fish that we should consume? There are various factors so that they do not comply with the recommendations of the experts. In a country with 8.000 km of coastline, it is impossible not to be able to access the products that our seas and rivers offer us. Referring to the same FESNAD survey, 32% of the population affirms that they don't do it for their cost, and 26%, for its thorn content.

What perhaps most of these respondents do not know is that in the market you can find different seasonal fish varieties with less name and identical flavor. Is it possible that the consumer does not know them because they are not offered, or the fishmongers do not sell them because they are not in demand? These fish are easier to find en the markets, but most fishmongers don't take them.

The scorpion fish: the king of seasonal fish

Although, as we have said, this seasonal fish it is more difficult to find, there are infinitely many different types of it. Perhaps the most popular is the scorpion fish. This rock fish was popularized by Juan Mari Arzak through his recipe for Scorpionfish cake. It is a very fish versatile and tasty, valid for cooking it well fried or grilled. It has quite a few bones, but it is possible to buy it in loins and frozen.

Like a good rock fish, its spines and head are a great ally for the elaboration of broths or suquets. Although there are large pieces that cost around €17, most of the time it is possible to find small pieces at a very affordable price. The scorpion fish is fished in many areas of Spain, especially in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Galicia. each time has more acceptance, especially in children, thanks to its flavor and texture.

A wide variety on the market

La mackerel is without a doubt another of the kings of the seasonal fish. Its strong season is in spring, but it is also widely consumed during the summer. Its price is very affordable, being able to find it in the market for four euros a kilo. This product is an abundant species in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, so it is a local product. It is ideal to consume grilled or pickled.

Like mackerel, mackerel (or mackerel) is another of the star products of the season. Being a blue fish, it has a very tasty taste and is essential for keep our health in check. Its price per kilo ranges between five and eight euros, so it is also very affordable. The best way to eat it is grilled or grilled.
