Philanthropic: a 100% social company

Philanthropic is not a startup to use, since it is a social enterprise. It is true that they share a characteristic: their sales are focused on the online world. However, the  is different. Its founder, lawyer and entrepreneur, javier sanz has granted space Madrid Works de Telemadrid a short interview where he reveals some of the details of the company.

- Philanthropic acts under the motto «Together we leave a sediment», since its main objectives are based on joint action (company and consumers). Thus, the purposes of the company are as follows. First, generate resources for social organizations. Second, inserting people with disabilities and vulnerable groups into employment. How? Creating jobs throughout the value chain for them, thus granting them the job opportunities they so badly need.

How did this initiative come about?

The initiative arose from the potential of the coffee market in Spain. More of 22 million people they consume coffee daily. These data plus the social and environmental commitment of Javier and his team have formed the perfect recipe for your success. They spent a year maturing the project until it was launched on the market. It was introduced in early October in the South Summit in which they were the official coffee. A las startups who attended liked both the coffee and the project and did not hesitate to contact Philanthropic to incorporate it into their offices.

Filantrópico offers its social coffee in three formats: capsules (for those who have less time), ground (for those who like coffee machines) and beans (for the more traditional ones). Its capsules are neither aluminum nor metal, they are compostable thus fulfilling its environmental objective. That is, they are waste organic. The coffee comes from the Latin American region: Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. They already work with farmers with financing difficulties who produce coffee in a sustainable way.

However, they continue to narrow the circle to contact specific farmers and plantations that meet social and environmental impact needs. In addition, the idea is to extend it to other continents, since its customers demand, for example, coffee from Africa. Therefore, they achieve a triple social impact at source (From the farmers they are generating positive social impacts). And the chain of transformation continues. They create employment for vulnerable and disabled people in Spain, mainly in Madrid. And also, they create jobs in the area of Marketing and Communication.

Is its price higher than the rest of the coffees on the market?

Javier Sanz wanted to make it clear that, although it is a non-profit company, it is a company that compete in the market. That is, the prices are comparable to the market price and its objective is to compete with the large coffee companies in Spain. Its price does not entail any additional increase to make donations, but it is the profits that are donated.

Touching a cost of a packing box or touching the cost of anything affects the entire model. We are planning that all day. Then you have to plan the treasury separately and it is also difficult because when you are a 100% social company, you are not the typical startup where you finance yourself with external investors, but we are doing it freely. With our own resources. With our savings. It is costing us more effort and more time. There comes a time when you are a bit tight on the budget.

The effort to improve the well-being of society, specifically of the most vulnerable groups, and to preserve the environment should not be an action isolated. Let's reward the sacrifice of Javier and the entire Filantrópico team by consuming their coffees and sharing their idea. Let's help them grow.
