Fish consumption, the big loser

In every crisis there is a clear loser, in this case and due to the high inflation suffered, it is fish and everything translates into clearly lower consumption. And what was once a consumer habit is clearly declining. It seems that attempts at promotional campaigns have no effect and visits to fishmongers are becoming increasingly less frequent.

The sector data reflects this and in the last year alone consumption has decreased by 1,5Kg per person per year. In this way, the annual consumption per Spaniard remains at only 18,5 Kg according to data from the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN). There is no point in insistently advertising the benefits that fish has in our diet and, consequently, in our health.

Another significant fact about the decrease in fish consumption in Spain is the progressive closure of fishmongers and although large stores are also noticing it, the biggest losers are, as always, local and family fishmongers. In this way, in Barcelona alone, the Gremi de Peixaters recognizes that 20% of the fishmongers have closed in just six years.

The price, the main cause of the decrease in fish consumption

In addition to the loss in our diet and having a poorer diet, all this is progressively leading to a loss of the country's gastronomic culture. And according to the data, the main cause is the increase in the price of fish in the market. All this is the result of high inflation.

It must be recognized that the increase in the price of fish is clearly higher than average inflation. The increase in the price of fresh fish stands at 6.7% and that of frozen fish at 6,8%. Attempts to promote cheaper fish have so far failed to reverse the situation and the main cause of the decline when consumers are asked is the price. Furthermore, the Government's refusal to reduce VAT on fish does nothing to help an already affected sector.
