Fish consumption decreased by 12% in the last year.

According to kantar consultant, fish consumption has decreased by 12% in the last twelve months. These data were presented during the 23rd seafood congress organized by the Aecoc association, which held its first day in Baiona, Galicia.

What are the reasons for the decline in fish consumption?

Approximately half of the drop in fish consumption is due to a decline in seafood purchase volumes. While the other half is attributed to a lower purchase frequency by consumers. Analyst Joan Riera has pointed out that in the last year, consumers have reduced the purchase of seafood products three times.

The Kantar report also highlights that families with children are the ones that have reduced their spending on fish the most. According to the report, 57% of the total decrease in spending on seafood corresponds to these households. This indicates that families with children are decreasing their investment in fish more than other consumer groups.

The president of Aecoc, Ignacio González, has reported the consequences of the fall in fish consumption, both for the health of consumers and for certain areas of the country where the fishing sector represents 10% of GDP. This decrease in fish consumption can have a negative impact on both the health of consumers, since fish is an important source of nutrients.

Ignacio González has insisted on the need to introduce direct aid to companies in the sector or measures to encourage the consumption of fish among the population.

According to the data provided by Aecoc and PwC, if a VAT rate of 0% had been applied to fish, families would have saved approximately 386 million euros in the first six months of the year. This figure is almost double the 421 million euros that were saved with the tax reduction approved in other foods
