Reduce the consumption of canned fish and shellfish

According to the data presented by Anfaco-Cecopesca There has been a decrease in the consumption of canned and semi-canned fish in Spain during 2022. All this produced by the reduction in consumption that occurred in homes due to high inflation.

The great drop in consumption occurred in preserves such as razor clams and mussels, followed by octopus and cockles. In the case of razor clams, the decrease has reached 41% and 25% in the case of canned mussels.

Although with a lower percentage reduction of 7,0%, tuna has had a significant decrease since the production of this preserve represents 70% of the total consumption of canned fish. Thus, the elaboration of canned tuna reaches 200 thousand tons per year. In second position, but far behind, canned sardines reach 20 tons per year.

On the positive side, only canned mackerel consumption increased with 4,1% and clams with only 1,2%. On the other hand, in part, this decrease, which globally is 7,7%, is offset by the increase in the value of these preserves, which has reached 6,3%.

Canned fish and fresh fish in clear decline

And it is that what is clear in the data presented is that the consumption of fish in Spain, in any format, suffers a significant decrease. Together, the decrease is 15,7% compared to the year 2021. In the case of fresh fish, it reaches a 16,4% decrease and in the case of frozen fish, a decrease of 12,4% is reflected.

Similarly, the decrease in the case of salted fish is 27% in consumption and in the case of smoked fish the decrease is 12,7%. As for shellfish, it follows the same trend and its reduction in consumption reaches 18,2%.
