  • Maturity: organic fruit and vegetables tend to be riper at the time of purchase due to their natural growing process. Therefore, it is advisable to consume it faster than conventional fruit to prevent it from spoiling.

Recommendations to extend shelf life and preserve fruit and vegetables in summer

  • Plan the purchase of fruits and vegetables. With rising temperatures and holidays, more food ends up wasting. For this reason, the young woman recommends planning the menus and avoiding buying more than necessary.
  • The freezer as an ally. In the case of skipping the previous recommendation, it is pointed out that the perfect option to give an organic product a second life can be to cook it and then freeze it. A practice that also benefits your pocket and is healthier. In addition, you can also prepare dishes such as stir-fries, pickles or jams.
  • Do not keep cut or wet fruit and vegetables in the fridge. The recommendation is to avoid keeping fruit and vegetables cut, peeled and/or washed, unless they are going to be eaten that same day. Doing so will accelerate its deterioration and oxidation, although it can be mitigated with a few drops of lemon to slow down its maturation.
  • Separate the pieces that are more mature. To improve conservation during the hottest season, it is important to keep the pieces of organic fruit and vegetables out of the wrappers. Also maintain a certain separation between fruits and vegetables, especially if some are in an advanced state of maturation.
  • Store food in proper containers. The best containers to store fruit and vegetables in summer are those made of natural fibers. That is, all those that allow perspiration, such as wicker baskets. Other containers that can be very useful are hermetic, both glass and plastic, including absorbent paper so that the interior does not get wet.
