A bad diet kills more than tobacco

Eating bad it can be deadlier than smoking cigars. This is how clear this statement is, which is drawn from a recent study published in The Lancet. In this scientific journal it has been read that a poor diet kills more than tobacco. About 11 million people die each year from an excess of salt together with the predominance of sugars and fats. But the most dangerous thing is the absence of fruits or cereals in your regular meals. This is how deaths occur due to inadequate nutrition.

The keys that a bad diet kills more than tobacco

The first thing the document points out is that in 2017, one out of every five people who died followed a poor diet. That 'high in salt and low in whole grain cereals, fruits, nuts, seeds and omega-3 acids ″. All this deficit is an important risk factor. Even more than "sodium, sugar and fat, which have been the main focus of the debate for the past two decades." Thus, nutrition policies They have not focused their efforts on these absences, but on the dangerous content of the diets.

The data that appear in the investigation reveals that 10 million patients suffered cardiovascular ailments and 913.000 had cancer. Then, in some 339.000 deaths, cases of diabetes type 2. Therefore, these diseases were present in this huge death toll. The title of the study "Global burden of disease" already indicates his goal of finding out the relationship between death and food.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers examined consumption trends based on up to 15 dietary factors key, between 1990 and 2017. Some 195 countries were included in this data collection. The authors acknowledge that there may be a small margin of error. This is because this process was not entirely equal in all countries, due to the lack of information in some.

However, the conclusion is clear: a poor diet kills more than tobacco. Too much food salty and low consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and milk. These were the factors in the diet that most affected the deaths. Hence, the ingestion of other products such as sugary drinks, fast food or red meat had less influence on the fatal outcome.

That dangerous relationship, little worrisome in Spain

Our country occupied the Third place among those 195 countries analyzed, so there is a really low proportion of deaths due to inadequate diet. France came in second place and Israel it took the first position of a list that was very negative with those countries that suffer from various social problems. For example, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Papua New Guinea or Marshall Islands.

Ultimately, the authors believe that it is necessary "to coordinate global efforts to improve diets through collaboration between different sections of the food system." They also highlight the "new policies" so that the diet is more balanced, without those essential shortcomings. Because, otherwise, it has already been shown that a poor diet kills more than tobacco.
