Coffee pulp flour: circular economy!

¿Coffee pulp flour? This proposal may sound extravagant. However, it is real and has already taken its first steps. How can you avoid wasting a large part of the coffee raw material going to waste? Is it beneficial for you? nutrition? Let's find out!

 

The circular economy is unstoppable!

This article is about a little known waste for the general public. Only the most informed coffee lovers know the process of roast. In this the main thing is separate the grain from the pulp. The latter is discarded since it is not of interest to the final coffee consumer. However, CoopeTarrazú (Cooperativa de Café de Costarrica) has found a solution. It consists of making flour from coffee pulp and then marketing it.

With this project, the emission of waste is avoided, in addition to obtaining an extra economic benefit. This flour has received the name of Nature Mix and has already reached the market as part of a commercial pilot. Its most important property is the high concentration of Antioxidants. It also has a higher amount of fiber than wheat flour. It is also rich in potassium, iron and vegetable proteins. This last factor makes it an interesting option for fans of alternatives to meat.

First successes of coffee pulp flour

At the moment you can only buy the flour of coffee pulp in Costa Rica. At the moment it has already reaped the first successes after the first prize in the contest Biocafe.This is an initiative developed by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). Its objective is to find and publicize ideas from entrepreneurs, companies and organizations that add value to the bioeconomy in the coffee chain.

By the way, we hadn't mentioned that the coffee pulp flour gluten free! Therefore it is suitable for celiacs. Now all that remains is to wait for the cooperative to take its next steps. Will the idea succeed commercially? when will it arrive Europe and the rest of Latin America? Unfortunately, we are not fortune tellers. We will keep an eye on the progress of the project.
