How is meat production evolving in Spain?

While we continue consuming meat products coming from various animals, the rise of those who prefer to opt for plant alternatives in this growing line of vegan goes hand in hand. More and more options are coming onto the market for substitutes for foods of animal origin, at the same time as the research in plant based progress. But, here we are not going to talk to you today about all these possibilities, but about how the meat production in Spain in the last year. So you can get an idea of ​​the one that increases or decreases in quantity and that you later find in your supermarket or usual butcher shop. Where do you think the shots go in that sense?

More pork and poultry

According to the survey livestock published a few days ago by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAP)In 2020, pork and poultry meat increased. Of the first, the increase was 8,24% compared to the previous year, so that in Spanish slaughterhouses they exceeded five million tons. The rise in meat production in Spain also includes the birds, although with a slight rebound compared to 2019. Thus, the increase was only 0% with 1,71 million tons of meat obtained. Yes, -2,04% of these animals were sacrificed. What autonomous community leads this poultry sector? Andalusia, followed by Catalonia and Galicia.

Less cattle, sheep, goats, horses and rabbits

On the other hand, with negative percentages we find in 2020 with setbacks in the meat production in Spain within three sectors whose quantity produced is usually less. First of all, we highlight the bovine, which suffered a decrease of 2,57% Over the previous year. A total of 677.296 tons was obtained from the cow, despite the fact that more calves were slaughtered than in 2019. As with the pig sector, the Catalan region leads in this type of cattle as the main producer in the country, followed by Castilla and León and Galicia.

With regards to Sheep meat, whose figures are low in the global meat sector, there was a decrease in 2020 with a 5,80% less (114.306 tons). Fewer lambs were slaughtered anyway. Here the Castilian-Leon community leads in quantity produced and is followed by the other Castilian region, with Catalonia third in the ranking. On the other hand, it should be mentioned that the caprine also reduced a 2%, with Andalusia at the head of this production.

In relation to rabbit sector, the amount of meat from rabbit produced was also less, a 1,75% with about 51.228 tons and with the Catalan region as the main producer. Lastly, we do not want to forget that in the national territory it is also obtained horse meat, which was reduced by 1,06% with only 9.529 tons. The Foral Community of Navarre is the main producer.
