Good news for the healthiest and somewhat bad for the spirits sector, since low alcohol consumption in Spain 1%, according to 2018 figures. As a whole, the ron, whiskey, vodka and Geneva that percentage decreased.

This has been demonstrated by the annual socio-economic report that elaborates the Spanish Federation of Spirits (FEBE). However, the sharp rise in both anise as of the liqueurs has compensated for this slight decrease. In total, some 215 million liters in these alcoholic beverages. Therefore yes low alcohol consumption in Spain, but very little.

First decline in the sector since 2014

En 2018 there was a decline not seen for four years. Thus, they were elaborated 302 million liters of spirits in Spain. But about 120 went to the export, a market that did register an increase of 4% compared to the previous year. Besides, the spanish gin experienced a sales rise of 30%, reigning among all.

Meanwhile, in the Interior market, of that total produced from distillates, the Spanish consumed 182 million liters. That figure, at least, for bottles with more than fifteen degrees of alcohol. Meanwhile, some 33 million in liters drunk correspond to foreign or imported alcoholic products.

In more concrete terms, both the vodka such as ron reflected the fall well, following with a bad course already taken in 2017. The first suffered more that decrease in volume (4%) and the second fell 3,5%. Instead, the Geneva it fell 2,2%, less than in the previous year.

Despite the poor results, the positive part for the sector was in the liqueurs and anise. Both drinks their consumption grew 2,4% and 4,4%, respectively. He too Punch rose 1,3%.

Low alcohol consumption in Spain, but in search of "quality"

El head of FEBE has better explained those data in the report to ensure that "we drink less but want to drink more and more of something of quality." Therefore, this consumption is focusing on the side premium of spirits.

We came from consecutive growth since 2014 and, in theory, with the increase in tourism and the economic improvement, we should not have fallen. But the reality is that 2018 was regular. Also, the first two quarters were the worst in our history

Apart from all that, another trend revealed of the statistics focuses on the moment of consumption, increased during the day to the detriment of the night. This is a surprising development, since most of the alcohol is drunk in night shift, especially by young people who are partying.
