Golden 61

For decades, the wine-growing region of Wheel was well known for the production of fortified wines such as the Golden 61. They differed from the others by their tan color and high alcohol content. Few wines have been better identified with an entire region.

La Cooperativa Agrícola Castellana, better known by its trade name Cuatro Rayas Winery. It has been for decades the main bulwark in the conservation of this traditional elaboration.

Thus was born the 61 Dorado

Now, they have wanted to commemorate the 80 years since its founding partners have mixed their family aged wines. This as the starting point of the cooperative and of this wine, in 1938. For this, the winery has bottled a solera selected from '61' Gold. Brand that has been marketed since the 50s and that has become a reference among lovers of quality wines from Wheel.

In 1938, the very young cooperative began to concentrate the efforts of its members. Until then, they developed this typology in their own homes following the work patterns inherited from their ancestors.

In that 1938 vintage, the partners decided to take the wine to the winery for the first time and put it in large vats. They chose the best they had with a clear objective: to elaborate aged in a community way and in everyone's home.

With the vats loaded with wine, the tank number 61 was revealed as the best of all. That is why they decided that that would be the name that the first bottles would wear: Fine 61. Then the first commercial brand of the cooperative was born.

The secret is in the overripe grapes

This white wine (Verdejo and Palomino) therefore adopts the surname 'Golden' because it alludes to their parenting time. It has a high graduation (15% Vol.) And goes through long aging. The secret is in the overripe grapes, fermentation and the own screed system.

It is clearly defined by its golden color, its aroma and its slightly roasted flavor. Golden, clean and bright. It is made by biological aging. This means that in the last phase, the wine that is taken out and goes to the barrel in the last year. It happens to have oxidative aging, by which it obtains that color and becomes golden.

The wine acquires more body and unique organoleptic attributes reminiscent of toast and vanilla. Aromas with nuances of dried fruits and raisins. Its flavor is slightly toasted.

Located in the heart of Wheel Cuatro Rayas Winery it accounts for about 20 percent of the production of the appellation of origin. Its more than 300 partners have around 2.300 hectares of their own vineyards.
