We continue with this second installment of the red grape varieties what do we have in Spain with their characteristics, after the first five that we already described in the I taking. Discover six more here. With them fabulous red wines are obtained throughout the national territory.

Caiño red

Variety of Galician origin which also has its white version. It is the main variety in the DO Ribeiro and is very present in the DO Rías Baixas and in the north of Portugal. Its clusters are small and not very compact. It produces grapes with hard skins and its wines are tannic and somewhat astringent and acidic but well elaborated. young wines very fruity and of quality.

Variety of Balearic Islands and their designations of origin Pla de Levante and Binissalem. It has a very high productivity and is adapted to the island, although it is sensitive to powdery mildew. Its bunches are medium and large and very compact. With this variety they are made structured wines somewhat tannic and not very alcoholic, as well as persistent on the palate.

Carignan

Also know as mazuelo, its cultivation is very extensive in La Rioja, Catalonia and in the appellations of origin of Calatayud, Costers del Segre, Tarragona and Terra Alta. Among other varieties of red grape, this one is productive and resistant to drought. Its bunches are large and somewhat compact with fine skins. Wines with very balanced acidity are made with a high alcoholic level and fruit aromas that are lost in long aging. Good choice for young wines and crianza wines.

fogoneu

Another of the red grape varieties of the Balearic Islands, especially in areas of Felanitx. It is a variety resistant to drought and poor soils. Its bunches are medium and compact, its acidity is low as well as its alcoholic level and its color. Balanced slightly fruity wines are produced, highly recommended for young wines. In France variety is used fogoneu gala to make some wines boujolais.

Red Garnacha, popular with red grape varieties

It is a very productive and resistant variety in the Iberian Peninsula, especially to the drought. It is accepted and cultivated in many appellations of origin of Spain to the point of being the second variety of cultivated red grape. Its bunches are medium and compact with a fine skin. With the Garnacha Low tannic wines and good acidity are made giving a good result in young wines. It is important to indicate that they are wines that evolve very well in storage, accepting the contribution of wood very well.

Garnacha Tintorera

Also known as Alicante, This variety is grown in the area of Spanish lift and in the area of Ourense and Pontevedra. The small grain Garnacha tintorera is known as Alicante Bouschet. It is the main variety in the DO Almansa. It is of medium productivity, sensitive to frost and early maturation. Its clusters are small and compact. One characteristic is that the pulp of its grape is red. Are made alcoholic and fruity wines with aromas of berries.
