Wine consumption recovers in Spain

After the pandemic years, wine consumption in Spain has recovered and reached 20 liters per person per year. A figure that is still far from the 23 liters that were consumed in 2019 and that set a record in recent years.

According to the data provided by the Spanish Wine Market Observatory and that they are obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture, the recovery is already solid. In this way, the 900 million liters of last year are exceeded and it is close to almost 1000 million liters. A figure far from the 1100 million liters that were consumed in 2019.

The hotel industry helps to recover wine consumption

With all these data it is shown that wine is recovering and has become fashionable again in the consumption of Spaniards. All this after the setback that was given to the sector due to the closure of the hospitality industry throughout the country. Although during the confinement household consumption rose, it did not compensate for the drop in the hotel industry in that period.

In addition to the great help for the reopening of the hospitality sector, innovation in the wine sector has encouraged consumption. All this makes wine recover in Spain. New wines, more attractive to the consumer and proposals for new varieties or recovered ancestral varieties and everything that gives value to wines in a differential way are bringing new consumers.

Also, the increase in consumers of fortified and sparkling wines, some of them made in areas that did not produce these wines, increases, albeit slightly, the consumption of wine. In this sense, the increase in wines and wineries that adapt to new consumers such as organic wines, vegan or without sulfites are increasingly important in the market.

Another great help are the campaigns that are carried out by inter-professionals and designations of origin. Actions to publicize the product and try to captivate segments such as the youngest consumer, which continues to be the great challenge.
