The best cheeses of the World Cheese Awards 2018

This year the Norwegian city of Bergen has been in charge of organizing the largest and most prestigious cheese competition, the World Cheese Awards.

For this reason, a total of 3472 cheeses from 41 countries were presented in the contest. 230 judges from 29 countries have been in charge of awarding the best, in their different categories, through a blind tasting system.

A Norwegian cheese has been the great winner

The overall winner was a Norwegian cheesemaker Jorn Hafslund with his Fanaost Aged Gouda, cheeses produced on a small farm with only twelve cows.

In short, the classification in the World Cheese Awards is made up of three categories, gold, silver, bronze and teams of 4 expert judges are in charge of evaluating each of the categories, assessing its flavor, texture, crust, color and the piece in general.

In conclusion of these rankings, the judges highlight a super gold cheese with what will finally be 66 super gold cheeses, of these, a final list of the 16 best cheeses is made.

The best Spanish cheese is Mas Garet

Thus, we are on the final list of the 16 best cheeses in the world, according to the World Cheese Awards, three Spanish cheeses. Thus, the best classified is the Catalan matured goat cheese from Mas Garet. We are in sixth position, the Maxorata matured with paprika and the cheese from the Fuerteventura ranchers group in position 11. To finish and in position 14 the mixed reserve from Valladolid Entrepinares cheese factory.

On the other hand, the Asturian dairy farm has won two awards with the Cabrales Cheese Cueva del Molín wins the silver medal, in the category "Blue cheese with designation of origin". The Smoked Cheese for Sandwich obtains the bronze medal, within the category "Hard cheese". The first is the Cabrales most awarded of the contest in the last decade, with six "Word Cheese Awards" in its different categories and a Silver Cincho award. It is a blue cheese of artisan manufacture with Denomination of Origin, made with raw cow's milk, matured in a natural cave and with a 3-month curing process. The second is a smoked cheese in the purest traditional style with rindless birch wood.

In addition, and within the DO Torta del Casar, the Quesos del Casar and Doña Francisca cheese factories have been distinguished with a gold medal and a silver medal respectively, in the category of soft-paste sheep cheeses.
