Jaén and its olive trees

Since ancient times, olive oil has been one of the essentials in the more mediterranean. In fact, only one 3% of the oil is produced outside the Mediterranean area. What is a PGI?

La IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) is one of the quality seals of the European Union.  Its purpose is to identify that a certain product originates from a certain place, a region or a country, has a certain quality, has a reputation or other characteristic due to its geographical origin. Furthermore, for most products, at least one of their production, transformation or processing phases takes place in the defined geographical area. This regime was created in 1992 for agricultural and food products and, from 2009, also for wines.

In Spain there are 90 IGP's of agri-food products and 42 GPS of wines. For example, some that you may have heard before like the PGI Banana from the Canary Islands, la PGI Santiago Cake or the PGI Sobao Pasiego. Each IGP has a certain number of members, whether they are marketers, producers of the product in question, etc. The more members an IGP has, the greater the export of a quality brand that geographic location will have, and, consequently, the better reputation.

The quality of all the products that present this seal is regulated under the European Union. No company can deceive us by assuring us that a food has a particularity from a place from which it does not come. So, if I want to buy olive oil from Jaén because is the best in Spain, I will buy the one of Jaen. Without a doubt.
