The Guild of Producers of craft beer in Catalonia, GECAN, together with the Barcelona Beer Festival (BBF) and the Generalitat, have presented this week the report 2018. Here are the conclusions that have been reached after analyzing the data.

Consumption of craft beer increases in Catalonia

From the report stands out the 20% increase in production during 2018, standing at 4,77 million liters. The value was 43 million euros, representing a market share of 1,8%. Although the market share is still low, it has increased from 1,3% in 2017 to 1,8% in 2018. These indicators show us the consolidation and increase of the craft beer in Catalonia in your market.

The 'nano' breweries are still the majority

On the other hand, the producers, grow in production but the high increase in breweries of the past years stops. They are still the 'nano' breweries, with a production of less than 24.000 liters per year, which occupy the 53% of the market followed by the micro breweries with a production of less than one hundred thousand liters per year with a 34%. For their part, the small ones with productions of more than one hundred thousand liters represent only 13% of the total.

More and more diversity of beers

Other interesting facts are the average number of beers produced by each brewery that arrives in 2018 at twelve, between the own range and special editions. The report states that the 50% of sales are carried out in the local market (less than 30 km from the factory) and that 48% of sales are made in specialized premises of beer. Only him 18% goes to export due to the bureaucratic complexity that it represents in small companies.

The use of local raw material in 38% of the factories in some of their elaborations. This issue deserves special attention as more and more are local hop producers. The presentation emphasized the need for artisanal malting to cover this lack with quality and price.
