Aldi's bet against food waste

The Aldi distribution chain launches a digital platform that, using an artificial intelligence algorithm, creates recipes with leftovers. The application “Tasty Leftovers” allows us to create recipes that help us use food scraps through leftover food.

This great initiative from the German chain Aldi helps us reduce food waste. In this way, in addition to making more use of food and not throwing away food, which is perfectly edible, it allows us to save. It is also a great initiative to raise awareness among the little ones of the importance of food and the effort of the food chain behind each of the products.

This application called “Tasty Leftovers” is open and free for the user. The tool allows, once we introduce the leftover ingredients that we have at home, to generate varied recipes.

Aldi's bet against food waste

Aldi is decisively introducing the fight against food waste into its DNA. In this way, last year 2022 it avoided the waste of 6500 tons of perishable products. In this way, 360 supermarkets of the German chain donated 1400 tons in Spain to 190 social entities.

Also the 30% discount applied to products with dates close to expiration or preferential consumption has helped save 6330 tons of food. Specifically, from April 2022 to March 2023, more than 3.620 tons of fresh meat and fish, nearly 1.130 tons of dairy products, more than 670 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables and nearly 910 tons of refrigerated food have been used.

Finally, highlight the work being done in the logistics areas to optimize the quality of products in transportation. Also in the design of packaging to prolong the useful life of the product as well as the optimization of orders at points of sale with an inventory adapted to customer needs that improve efficiency in the process.
