The avocado of Valencia wants its stamp

A quality figure. That is what the producers of a food very rich in nutrients and ideal to consume within a healthy and balanced diet want to achieve. Because Valencia avocado wants to differentiate itself from the rest from countries outside the European Union. Be through a PGI, CV or PDO. The objective is to grant the Valencian Community the origin of a product that is very positive for farmers and, in addition, enjoys a great reception in the European market. That has counted Effeagro the secretary general of the Avocado Producers Association (Asoproa).

«High profitability» in the avocado of Valencia

This characteristic product for its huge round bone inside and different greenish tones for several of its parts is "very well valued by the European consumer". That ensures the secretary general of asoproa, Jose Gaspar, who recognizes the quality of a product also «kilometer zero». Throughout the region, Valencia avocado has a total of 250 farms with a thousand hectares dedicated to its cultivation.

However, it may be that in the near future (the next few years) the two thousand hectares, because it is a fruit of «high profitability«. This happens because, nowadays, more and more farmers are interested in venturing to grow avocados. For a few years now, informative conferences have been organized on the viability of this product in the Valencian countryside. This, since "not all areas are suitable for its development, since the climate and water are limiting factors."

As Gaspar explains, Valencia avocado needs more water than a citrus fruit (such as orange) and enjoy mild temperatures. At the moment, the community of the eastern peninsula is one of the best producers of this fruit. Therefore, they want to "certify their quality and that production is carried out under the same standards." They could thus obtain a Protected Designation of Origin (DOP), a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) or one "CV" quality. In the next few days they will have a meeting with the Department Valencian to study this matter.
