They discover the oldest winery in the world!

At the end of last year it was discovered oldest warehouse of the world in Israel. It is part of one of the largest, oldest and most complex archaeological sites of the Byzantine era.

It is a complex of more than 1500 years old near the city yavne in the southern part of Tel Aviv (Israel). It was discovered last October and continues to discover and surprise the archaeologists who made the discovery.

The complex of old cellars was able to make more than two million liters of wine annually. The dimensions are really surprising and include five wineries to press the grapes, aging warehouses and bottling areas. They have also discovered the ships where the amphorae where the wine was bottled were made.

The oldest Byzantine winery

According to experts, the discovered complex is from the Byzantine that is to say of the centuries IV y V after Christ. It is the largest and oldest winery complex to date. According to the directors of the excavation Dr. Elie Haddad, Liat Nadav-Ziv and Dr. Jon Seligman: “We were surprised to discover a cellar of this size and with this level of sophistication. In addition, the decoration of the winery denotes the economic power of its owners”. The directors add "A calculation of the production leads us to conclude that more than two million liters were produced completely by hand and by hand in the uncovered cellars." Much of the production was exported to Greece, Turkey y Egypt.

On the other hand, presses have been discovered with surprising dimensions of more than Sqm 225. Around these were the compartments for the fermentation and storage of the wine.

In the same place fragments of vases y amphoras as well as the routes that were in the warehouse. All of this is being prepared to be visited once the conservation work is finished and it is added to the gastronomic history.
