Campo de Calatrava new Designation of Origin

The Campo de Calatrava Denomination of Origin is now a reality. In this way, the European Union has registered this week the “Campo de Calatrava” wine DO, which is the 21st Denomination of Origin of Castilla-La Mancha and the tenth in terms of wines.

With this DO, Spain already has 102 Denominations of Origin in its territory of the total of 1641, just for wines, that there are in the entire European territory.

The Campo de Calatrava region is located at the most southeastern end of the Iberian massif. Close to the Betic mountains, it is characterized by being one of the last to have volcanic activity in the entire Iberian Peninsula. All this is reflected very clearly in its floors. These soils are rich in clay and highly stony. All of this gives it soils where the vine grows with a personality that reflects its environment. The Campo de Calatrava, which includes the new designation of Origin, encompasses 16 towns with an altitude of between 700 and 900 meters.

Without a doubt, the great diversity of wines and varieties that the new designation of origin protects, mark and will mark this designation of origin. With an area of ​​13500 hectares and its characteristic soils, they are the cradle of great and diverse wines.

Red, white, rosé and sparkling wines are made in the DO. Its different preparations produce dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet or sweet wines, both young and aged. The authorized varieties for red wines are: Cencibel or Tempranillo, Bobal, Graciano, Garnacha, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot. For white wines, the authorized varieties are: Macabeo, Airén, Verdejo, Chardonnay, Muscat and Muscat of Alexandria, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.
