Finally it will not be possible and 9 prestigious cava producers will abandon the Denomination of Origin Cava. The conflict began when a few months ago, six of these nine cavas were grouped into a brand called Corpinnat. The cavas that comprise this brand are: Gramona, Llopart, Torelló, Nadal, Recaredo, Sabaté i Coca, Can Feixes, Júlia Bernet and Mas Candí.
The purpose of Corpinnat, Meaning Color (heart) and pinnat (rocky mountain, as the Penedes) is to establish production rules. Also a geographical area where that wine could be made.
Corpinnat, organic production of native varieties and on the same farm
All with the aim of making a product of highest quality with more demanding production standards. The negotiation was established so that they could be labeled within the DO Cava. The idea of Corpinnat was to group the 46 municipalities that are the historical nucleus of the production of Penedes.
Everything to make a production 100 ecological% with native varieties. The commitment and guarantees of the new brand is of a minimum aging of 18 months. Focusing on aging of 30 and up to 60 months.
Currently the DO Cava It only requires a minimum aging of 9 months. Another important factor is that from 9 Corpinnat cava producers the elaborations will be carried out within the same farm.
Sparkling wines from those 9 cava producers
A priori, it seems compatible that there is a distinctive within a D.O to differentiate and give prestige to a specific production. As reported, the problem in the negotiation has been the territorial limitation that Corpinnat I wanted to limit in the aforementioned 46 municipalities.
Currently the DO Cava It is made in areas of Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, Navarra, La Rioja, Alaba, Zaragoza and Badajoz. Also the control of the productions of Corpinnat has been a source of discrepancy. The cavas that belong to it wanted it to be a independent entity. Instead, the regulatory council wanted to do it within the entity.
Already in the spring we will find in the market the first bottles with the new Corpinnat badge and without that of the DO Cava. In this way we will begin to speak, even more, of sparkling wines from those 9 cava producers and not just cava.
Already in 2014 there was a group of cavas that left the DO Cava for a similar conflict. At that moment they formed the DO Penedès the brand Classic Penedès. Now, the 9 cava producers they leave the other where they have been for years and years.
