Improvement in the labeling of honey and other products

This Wednesday the European Parliament gave the green light to an agreement for the new labeling, composition, nomenclature and presentation of products such as honey. Everything that has already been known as "breakfast directives." This directive is of special importance for the beekeeping sector since it has suffered a high level of intrusion and fraud. All of this is added to a sector that, due to pathology problems in bees and climate problems, has suffered a decrease in production and is suffering a serious crisis.

The regulations that will be introduced will make it easier for consumers to have more exact information about the origin and composition of honey. All of this will allow the transparency of the food chain to be improved. This standard will facilitate the reduction of fraud and adulteration of honey. Specifically, the percentage of each of the countries of origin of the honey must be indicated. Controls on the adulteration of honey with sugar will also be expanded.

These measures in the beekeeping sector are very important to strengthen the territory's producers. Also to protect bees and pollination and thus reinforce the biodiversity of the territory.

Honey, juices and jams will see improved labeling

In the same way that honey will improve in labeling, so will juices and jams. Juices, for their part, must clearly indicate the sugar content of the juices on the label.

As for jams and jams, they must indicate the fruit content. In the case of jams, the minimum content will go from 350 to 450 grams per kilo. In the case of jams it will go from 450 to 500 grams per kilo. All with the aim of reducing the contribution of sugars to these products and improving quality.

All these rules, already agreed upon, will be voted on and published in the journal of the European Union within a period of 20 days. When they come into force, countries will be able to give up to two years for their application.
