It is true that this should not be new, but it certainly is. The elaboration of these meat products is not as well known as it could be, and that is why the Mercadona sausage comes stomping with its concept of 'real meat'.

The truth about supermarket sausages

The main issue is that not all sausages that are sold in supermarkets - it is not necessary to generalize, since it is true that there are some exceptions- They are made with the ingredients that we think. In other words, they do contain meat but not in the way we imagine.

Have you ever heard of the mechanically separated meat (CSM)? Well, it is the traces of meat that remain attached to the bones when the cuts are made that are later taken to the trade. Well, it is with those remains that are left with which some of the sausages that we can find on the shelves of supermarkets. Did you imagine that they were made that way?

What does 'mechanically separated meat' imply?

Transparency when it comes to publicizing the process of making these products is mandatory, so If made with CSM, they must be labeled as such. Why? Well, because although the taste does not differ too much from what it should be, the properties of the food do.

Among others, one of the limitations when using the scraping technique to achieve CSM is that consistency is lost characteristic of these meat products. This leads to the addition of water and fat -not too healthy in those amounts-, as well as other products such as potato starch. All of this makes some hot dogs not as healthy or 'real' as we think they are.

It is at this point that the new incorporation of the Valencian supermarket chain enters, Mercadona sausage with 'real' meat. It stands out, among all the others, for the fact that it contains a higher proportion of meat, as its description says. In addition, the composition of ingredients remains in 84% "select meat 100% pork". This is good news due to the fact that, in addition to containing fewer additives, it has more proteins characteristic of meat.

Another point in favor of this new sausage is that its salt content is not too high -It is considered this way when it is greater than 1 gr per 25 gr-. Being made up of those ingredients, the need to include worse ones decreases. As a more gastronomic fact, the same brand describes it as "handcrafted in natural casing, you will notice the characteristic 'knock'when biting ”. His price It is perhaps what can put you back because, obviously, it is more expensive than others that the Valencian supermarket sells.

With all this, you must always bear in mind that, although there are sausages like this that are more natural, its consumption must be moderate, since fats they are still there. If we add to that the fact that some are not made with the ingredients we believe in, the consumption should be even more controlled. Not because the packaging says they are made with seemingly healthier chicken or meats, they are. You should not forget that, in addition, these products are included in the class of processed meat.

Once again, it is important to highlight the importance of knowing well what we consume. Because, sometimes, we are not aware of what we buy; that is why this new Mercadona sausage with 'real' meat is good news for those who enjoy this type of food from time to time. Have you tried them already?
