Torres family has recently acquired an extensive property in Chilean Patagonia with a view to mitigating the effects of climate change. The farm, located in the province of Aysén, is known by the name of 'Los Cóndores'. It occupies an area of more than 5.000 hectares and will be used to plant forests with a double objective. 'Los Cóndores' is a farm for livestock use, with the typical vegetation of the steppe meadow and lagoons with abundant birds. The arrival of the settlers at the end of the XNUMXth century would have caused the substitution of the forests in this area by prairies.
Thus, the intention of Torres family is to reforest these lands, preserving the local flora and fauna. At the end of 2016, he already acquired a 740-hectare farm in the province of Coyhaique with the same intention. Also in Chilean Patagonia, in an area called Altos de Ñirehuao.
Forests contribute to the fight against climate change by their ability to capture CO2 from the atmosphere. Also by storing carbon in the form of biomass (trunk, branches, bark and roots). About half of the dry matter in the plant is carbon. The tree captures more CO2 in its growth stage, until it reaches full maturity.
Sustainable forest management guarantees the persistence, improvement, growth and renewal of the forest mass. Likewise, it allows a permanent retention of carbon over time.
