Alcampo buys 235 supermarkets from DIA

DIA group and To field have announced an agreement whereby Alcampo will buy 235 supermarkets from DIA. The supermarkets are located in eight autonomous communities, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Galicia, Madrid, Cantabria, Navarra and the Basque Country. The purchase also includes a logistics platform located in the province of Valladolid.

As reported by DIA, the transfer will take place within the first half of 2023 as long as the competition authorities give their approval. This operation has a scope of 180 thousand square meters of commercial space and a sale value of 267 million euros.

As part of DIA's redefinition strategy, the group has decided to sell these supermarkets to reinvest the funds obtained in its new supermarket model. In this way, with these revenues, DIA aims to consolidate and promote a supermarket model based on proximity. As Ricardo Álvarez, CEO of DIA, commented, “This operation allows us to move faster in the objective of finishing the remodeling of our current network and accelerating the pace of store openings. Also generate opportunities for all our employees, franchisees and suppliers, allowing us to be even closer to our customers”.

The agreement affects 5000 employees who will see the contract subrogated and who will maintain their working conditions, according to the unions.

Alcampo consolidates its presence in Spain

For the French supermarket chain Alcampo, this purchase is an opportunity to consolidate and reaffirm itself in Spain. For Alcampo, Spain is a strategic country and with this important acquisition it accelerates its growth to reach its goal of being the preferred supermarket brand for Spaniards.

Alcampo currently has 310 large supermarkets totaling just over 500 square meters. For its part, DIA has 3.702 smaller supermarkets but which have more than 1,4 million square meters throughout Spain.
