The DO Cava loses against the DO Cava Requena denomination

The movements and conflicts in the DO Cava continue with the denomination of the DO Cava Requena area. After the split of some companies to form the Corpinnat brand and the “redefinition” of the DO Cava, the names that the different production areas of the Cava Denomination of Origin, which has supra-autonomous reach, should receive, emerged. Now the Supreme Court has decided not to admit the appeal filed by the Regulatory Council of the Cava Denomination of Origin for processing. This appeal went against the ruling handed down by the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid that ruled in favor of the Requena cava producers to identify themselves with this name.

The conflict surfaces again when the DO Cava accepts that areas be created within the same DO. Let us remember that the DO Cava is made in Catalonia, Aragon, Extremadura, Navarra, La Rioja, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community. In this sense, the areas of Comtats de Barcelona, Valle del Ebro and Viñedos de Almendralejo arise. These were accepted without any problem but in the case of the area of Requena the DO Cava no I accept it for fear of confusion with the denominations of DO Utiel-Requena wine. And for the moment it was provisionally called Levante although the only manufacturing municipality is Requena.

The DO Cava should call the area provisionally called Levante Requena.

From now on, the DO Cava Regulatory Council must make changes to the labeling regulations. Everything so that the 'Requena' area is the name that appears on the labeling and in all the information about the DO Cava.

Now with the resolution of the Supreme Court it forces the DO Cava to accept the name of the Requena area. In addition, the Cava Denomination of Origin must pay the legal costs.
