DO Cigales completes its harvest

Cigales

La Denomination of Origin Cigales It ended its harvest with a total production of 5.749.295 kilos of grapes. This represents a 33% decrease compared to the previous year's harvest, which amounted to 8.489.773.

Spring frosts, drought, and excessive heat this year have caused the decrease in production. All in a complicated campaign, meteorologically speaking. Fortunately, this is not always synonymous with a poor final production in terms of wines. On the contrary, it is also possible to obtain excellent quality despite adverse conditions for a considerable time.

This weather situation also led to the advance of the harvest to September 6 in the municipality of Cigales. The harvest concluded on October 9 in the Palencia town of Owners. A month of grape collection that registered its highest activity from September 14 to 28.

DO Cigales does numbers

As determined by the Technical Services of the Regulatory Council of the DO Cigales, the health of the grapes was very good. The positive consequence of the lack of rain and high temperatures in spring and summer has caused the absence of any type of disease in the vineyard. Thus, it has been possible to obtain healthy grapes for the subsequent elaboration of a top-class wine.

Due to the low load of the vines, everything that the plant synthesized has fed the few bunches. As a result, a high concentration of components has been obtained in the fruit. All of this suggests a excellent quality that could partially offset the drop in production.

The main variety of the Denomination of Origin Cigales, Tempranillo, has accounted for 87% of production. The Garnacha has registered 5,6%, and Verdejo, 4,4%. The remaining 3% is distributed among the rest of the host varieties: Cabernent Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Albillo, Viura, Syrah and Garnacha Gris.
