But what do the statistics tell us? Is the activity really going so well? Let's see it.

The return of Catalan cava

Catalan cava finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel. The pandemic has been devastating and social distancing has implied a dizzying drop in sales. However, we have good news. The Designation of Origin hopes to close this year with the values prior to the pandemic. Where does this sudden burst of optimism come from? Well, since cava shipments grew by a 16'45% during the first nine months of the year compared to the same period of 2019.

To provide more figures, we can mention the number of shipments in the first quarter of 2019. There were a total of 163 million bottles in quarters of 8, shipments stood at 163,8 million bottles. This year's number is 170 million! A clear increase also if we take into account the 146 million during the fateful 2020. So, if the trend continues, Catalan cava will manage to recover.

Quality matters

Undoubtedly, there are two important axes that support this year's growth. One is that of the highest quality drinks. The caves of Upper Guard (the highest prestige) have skyrocketed. Thus, during these nine months the Cava Reserve increased a 34'73% compared to 2020. Gran Reserva, on the other hand, added an astonishing 42'11%. To end this category, those of Guarda have grown a 14'4%.

The second axis is that of exports. These have grown to spectacular proportions. Let us bear in mind that two thirds of the cava produced is sold outside of Spain. Thus, it highlights the fact that none of the ten countries that import the most cava has reduced its consumption during the first quarter. Among these stands out United States. It has increased its imports almost a 63% in the first nine months! This is followed by other large increases such as Russia (44%), Canada (28%), Netherlands (22%) y Germany (11%).

La Designation of Origin he is confident that the relaxation of social distancing will continue and that sales will increase. Without a place, it would be good news for a brand that brings together more than 6.800 winegrowers. Its international presence is so powerful that it has 350 wineries associates in more than one hundred countries. In addition the cava in Catalan is prepared with great respect for its origin, the land and the sustainability. What will you toast this with? New Years Eve ?
