Health alert on watermelons

With the summer we want fresh fruits that hydrate us and provide freshness, without a doubt one of the best for this summer heat is the watermelon This year is not a good year in Spain for its production, the drought and some weather problems such as hail have reduced this production. With all this, imports from other countries have increased. One of the countries that export this fruit to Spain and Europe is Morocco.

Now, as happens from time to time with third countries, there is a health alert due to the use of pesticides in some items. And it is that the legislation and controls on the use of pesticides in third countries is very different. It is a recurring problem that occurs mainly in citrus fruits from South Africa or other fruits of Latin American origin.

The recent detection of a consignment of watermelons of Moroccan origin with high levels of pesticides has raised the alert once again. In this case, the European rapid alert system for food and feed has detected a consignment from Morocco with levels of methomyl. This pesticide is a pesticide, not authorized in Europe.

It is unknown where these watermelons have been distributed that have caused the health alert

The European rapid alert system for food and feed (RASFF) has issued a health alert reporting the detection of a batch of watermelons from Morocco. A high level of methomyl was found in them as published Facua. Methomyl is an unauthorized pesticide that causes problems with dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, vomiting, tremors, headaches, muscle weakness, and blurred vision. In addition, the combination of this substance with the consumption of alcohol could cause renal failure and in the central and peripheral nervous system.

Currently, it is unknown where these watermelons have been distributed in Spain, which shows that the traceability systems do not work correctly. Neither does the sanitary control at source.

The trade agreements of the European Union so that products can be sold and bought with third countries not only harm many sectors economically and benefit others, but can also affect people's health.
