La DOCa Priorat will celebrate on April 20 and 21 two days of blind tasting. It will be the 15th Tasting of Fincas and Villas, in Scala Dei. The town considered the historic cradle of wines with a designation of origin Priorat.

This is the great annual quality test of the wines of the Qualified Denomination of Origin (DOCa) Priorat. Year after year it contributes to constructing a map that is more and more approximate to the properties, similarities and differences that are recorded in the wines of the different areas of this wine-growing region.

White wines from DOCa Priorat will be tasted and they will choose to be villa wines

A Pair of 40 tastersInter oenologists and expertsThey will taste the wines that have just come out of the barrel for two days. Without knowing which producer they belong to or which town they come from. This is the fourth year that they have been included in the tasting white wines that choose to be classified as Villa wines.

In this case of the harvest 2016. This will be the first day (April 20), during which all of the 24 micro-vinifications of garnacha and mazuelo. Corresponding to the 12 zones of the DOCa Priorat (2016 vintage).

During the second day, on Friday, April 21, the participants will undergo the blind qualification tasting red wines from the 2015 vintage. Those who opt for the categories of Finca or Villa. For fifteen editions, the Tasting of Fincas and Villas It is part of an ambitious and pioneering project.

Together with the URV, VITEC and INCAVI, DOCa Priorat aims to study the evolution and characteristics of Priorat wines over the years. In this way, the differentiating features of these wines can be identified. Especially in regards to your geographical origin within the territory of the Qualified Denomination of Origin Priorat.

With the annual tastings, the evolution of villa wines is also analyzed

In this way, the technicians who coordinate the Cata analyze the constants that present the results of each of these annual tests. With this they compare them, which has allowed to describe some specific characteristics according to the area of ​​origin of the wine.

These results are very useful for ascientifically validate wines who choose to identify themselves as Villa wines (or Vila). That is to say, wines that on their label identify their name with the town or area of ​​origin.

All the blind tastings will be coordinated by the dean of the Faculty of Oenology of the Rovira i Virgili University, Dr. Joan Miquel Canals. They will be technically directed by a team from Wine Science Park - VITEC. They will be carried out with the support of the Falset School of Oenology.

A tasting endorsed by the Incavi

In the treatment and analysis of results, the Catalan Institute of Vine and Wine (INCAVI). In this way, this cata and its results have the scientific and official endorsement that guarantees its reliability. Both from the academic and administrative fields.

The technicians of INCAV They also collaborate in the work of analysis and elaboration of 24 experimental microvinifications. These will be tasted during the first day.

La DOCa Priorat is the only denomination of origin qualified in Catalonia. One of only two with this stamp in Spain. According to the production processes and systems that are carried out in this wine-growing region.
