Get to know the best tomato in Spain

In search of the best flavor, aroma, texture and color that recalls the authentic flavors of yesteryear. This is the goal of the Old Tomato Fair of Santa Cruz de Bezana in Cantabria. This weekend has been done and there is already a winner for this year. We tell you what it is and what makes it so authentic.

Medium in size, somewhat sweet and with few seeds

The winning tomato variety of the contest is originally from the Basque Country and its name is Aretxabaleta  , as the name of the Gipuzkoan town where it is mostly grown. It is also known as purple. This variety has always been distinguished for its high quality in other similar competitions. It is distinguished by being a compact tomato, with fewer seeds than normal and a pinkish color, its skin is thin and this makes it very fine and tasty on the palate. Its maximum flavor is achieved only when it is optimally ripe.

This variety is native to the Basque Country, it is a resistant variety and it has been recovered for some years. Although its production is not very high, the quality compensates for the lower production.

Best foreign tomato and best tomato from Cantabria

In the Old Tomato Fair of Santa Cruz de Bezana the Best Foreign Tomato that this year has won yellow tomato from Russia. He Best Tomato of Cantabria has relapsed again for him tomato from Abanillas which was the winner in the previous edition. Finally the  Costa Quebrada Special Award , a newly created award for all professional producers and that won the pink tomato from Izanoa. The producer is Víctor López, a young farmer from La Rioja.

The jury of this contest was made up of chefs, farmers and gastronomic journalists and chaired by the chef Pepa Munoz, passionate about tomatoes. A fair that has been very successful, which shows the growing interest of the public in seeking the genuine and authentic flavor of the products.
